Well for those of you who don't know, I'm taking Studio Art this year at school. We finally got the chance to do an independent project and I really wanted to work on something that I would put in my portfolio. The above is the result.
A good two weeks of class time went into this. And it's extremely symbolic.
As college applications have been looming ever closer, I've been forced to take a more serious approach to art and what it's role will play in my future career. When I heard of the UCLA Design and Media Arts major, I was ecstatic. Finally, something that fused my love of art with my love of technology.
It seemed to be the perfect solution, the balance of practicality and creativity!
Though I am unsure whether I am ready to make portfolio work, I thought I'd give it a try anyway.
So here it is: Artificial Aesthetic.
A fusion of traditional ukiyo, woodcut, and lithographic type feel with a modern, technological twist.
Three young ladies in kimono lie among lush and vivid scenery, yet all around them nothing is real?
The trees are mechanical instruments the Crane and Koi are robotic creatures, and the three young women choose to indulge in their headphones instead of the scenery.
It's a statement on many levels. It's a statement about my love of visual aesthetics while still embracing the harshness of the technological age. It represents how the future views technology and nature.
In the end, it represents a lot of things I can't put into words.
Further symbolism (for those who are bored) is the Crane and the Koi, the Crane stands for wisdom (or longevity, but in this case wisdom) while the Koi represent luck.
If this is to be a portfolio piece I need both Wisdom and Luck to be able to get into college.
Yea, I am a nerd xD.
Surprisingly, when I showed it to people, they kind of got my message right away. I was really pleased!
This was done in sakura microns, COPIC sketch markers, and chiyogami paper (for the patterns).
wooow that's so cool!! The patterns are really awesome, and the way they're laid out is eyecatching. I think the first things I noticed were the water and koi. very neat. That crane is really nifty...
